At the Edge of Mirkwood (Eaves of Mirkwood) is a booklet containing an adventure designed to introduce new players to Adventures in Middle-Earth, or which can serve as a standalone episode to be incorporated into a campaign. The booklet opens with a table of contents and credits page, followed by an introduction (7 pages) setting out the rules and their adaptations to OGL 5th.
Next, Part 1: Many Meetings (Part 1 – Many Meetings, 2 pages) introduces Woodmen-Town, a village on the edge of Mirkwood, where the adventurers gather. In Part Two: The Journey Begins (Part 2 – The Journey Begins, 3 pages), the characters prepare for their expedition to the City of the Lake. This chapter provides a simplified version of the travel rules for this purpose. Part Three: On the Road (Part 3 – On the Road, 3 pages) helps the GM manage the journey, notably through a table of six travel events spread across 2 of the 3 pages.
Part Four: Ambush (Part 4 – Ambush!, 2 pages) sees the characters fall into an ambush set by goblins. Then, Part Five: Time to Celebrate! (Part 5 – Celebration!, 3 pages) allows them to get to know the dwarves who fell into the same ambush as them a little better. It’s a chance to have a good time, sing, organise riddle contests, or even blow smoke rings with pipe tobacco.
Unfortunately, Part Six: Prisoners (Part 6 – Capture!, 2 pages) sees the characters learn the hard way that the pig they’ve just greedily devoured was meant for someone else. Their complicity in this crime will have to be explained in Part Seven: Justifications (Part 7 – Explain Yourselves!, 4 pages). This provides an opportunity to clear up a misunderstanding thanks to the rules of the hearing.
Part Eight: The Warg Attack (Part 8 – Warg Attack!, 1 page) sees the consequences of their feast unfold, and a fierce battle ensue. Finally, Part Nine: The Wandering Wizard (Part 9 – The Wandering Wizard, 1 page) sees the characters resume their journey and encounter a strange traveller in a grey cloak…
Next come the game aids, namely:
Riddles (1 page) offers several riddles and their answers.
Maps (2 pages) features two maps of the Black Forest, one for the Keeper of Legends and the other for the players.
2 combat cards for the goblin ambush and the Warg attack respectively.
The Optional Class Rules (2 pages, French version) propose modifications to the Protector and Scholar classes. These appear on a separate sheet in the English version.
A reminder about stat sheets, experience, an announcement of the next supplement and the OGL licence (3 pages)
