With the miniatures on the table, every building from the building tiles will become visible in 3D. They increase the immersive aspect of the game and are purely aesthetic in nature. They do not in any way influence the mechanics of the game. The expansion also contains plastic markers for workers, engineers, children, and automatons to replace the wooden counterparts in the core box.
