Helsinki
The famous Senate Square in the center of the Finnish capital is surrounded by government buildings, the university, the cathedral, and the Sederholm House. The players' task is to design pavilions across the square to protect pedestrians from the rain. Helsinki is based on the design of Copenhagen by the same design team, but with some added complexity.
Game Overview
The central board depicts the Senate Square with:
- 8 spaces (two on each side)
- 8 cards, with each card connected to two spaces
Players take turns advancing their pawn and making strategic moves to take cards or build pavilions.
Gameplay
- Advance the Pawn: On their turn, a player advances their pawn 1-3 spaces.
- Take Cards or Build Pavilion:
- Take Cards: Players may draw the two face-up cards connected to their space into their hand. Players must respect the 7-card hand limit, which adds a key challenge in the game.
- Build Pavilion: Players play a card showing the shape of the pavilion piece they want to build. They must also play additional cards of the same color to match the size of the piece.
- Sliding the Pavilion: The pavilion piece must be "slid" onto the player’s game board (representing the Senate Square) from the side of the square corresponding to their pawn's position on the central board.
Special Features
Covering certain spaces on the player’s board earns a coat of arms, which can be spent to activate one of 15 one-time special actions, offering additional strategy and variety.
Players score points by completing rows and columns on their game board. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins!
